I don't make mistackes.

We all know the old joke " I made a mistake once, I thought I'd made a mistake, but I hadn't".

Well typically Calligraphers do make mistakes, so how do we correct them.

Electric eraser.

One of the favourites is to use an electric eraser. These are fairly expensive but do do an excellent job, particularly with media such a gouache. Gouache is pigment based and tends to sit on top of the paper, rather than soak into to it, as would a dye based colour. Many people favout the use of pink erasers for the erasing tool. You have to be careful not to press too hard and leave a pink stain on the paper.

Razor Blade

Another technique is to shave off the offending piece. Barb demonstrated using a straight 'safety razor. Fold your calligraphic piece over a tube or similar object and CAREFULLY scrape away at the offending piece. With care you can remove the mistake. Prepare the area by carefully using a plastic eraser to smooth the paper and try to use as fry a medium as possible to reletter, to avoid feathering. You can also used a curved blade or scalpel on a flat piece of paper. The better the paper the more abuse it will stand with out destroying it.

Bury it

Another technique employed by Calligraphers (and Doctors) is to bury their mistakes.

One of our members gave details of a project she had recently worked on where the recipient's name had been entered incorrectly into a directory she was working from. The name should have been Phyllis but had been misspelled as Phillis. Realizing her mistake she very carefully corrected the offending letter 'i' only to realize the wrong letter has been corrected, now she had Phillys. The solution, write the name elsewhere and cover the mistake with a leaf.
