Four Guild members traveled to Hamilton for presentation of his work given by Martin Jackson from Vancouver.
Martin was in Hamilton to give an Italic workshop that weekend. Martin explained his techniques for layout and design and illuminated his presentation with a number of slides of his work.
Martin has a great interest in butterflies and has an extensive collection at home. His interest in the subject follows through to his calligraphy, where many pieces feature text and images of butterflies.
The quality of his work has to be seen to be believed, on could easily be forgiven for mistaking one of his paintings as the real thing. Martin's enthusiasm and humour were much enjoyed and encouraged us to renew our calligraphic efforts.
A couple of our members attended Martin's workshop that weekend where we had the opportunity to view his original calligraphic pieces. To say we were awestruck would be an understatement.
Martin has some 40 years experience as a calligrapher and thinks nothing of doing 20 or 30 layouts before finalizing his piece.
Typically he will do several, similar pieces, each with a slightly different decoration or colouring.
If you want to be like Martin its'simple' just practice, practice, practice!
