Of Christmas Past

Clare Kawula

Last year I attended the Niagara Calligraphy Guild Christmas dinner. I was the recipient of a very interesting Christmas card during the card exchange.

Barb Sutherland was the creator of my card. Not only was it a Christmas card but it was also a Christmas tree ornament. "Now make sure you hang it on your tree," Barb recommended. Walt and I followed her advice. We had to make sure though, that it hung "very high" on our tree so our cat, Serenade-in-Blue would not play with it, chew it or eat it.

Here it is now well into November, 2001. Walt and I have it placed in a lovely box in our dining room. Needless to say, we are still enjoying the ornament.

The base of the ornament is a triangle. Each of the three sides is triangular. Each side and base is made with beautiful red, white and green-marbled paper. The inside is a lovely soft silver. The three side triangles meet at the top, forming a point. These are tied with white ribbons. When you untie the ribbons, this procedure allows the triangles to open like three flower petals. As these petals open, one discovers a tiny accordion pleated Christmas card with a message done in beautiful Calligraphy. Also, one is surprised to find a minute wicker basket laden with Christmas flowers.

Many months have passed since Christmas. Our lovely ornament-card continues to bring us much delight. Many times the familiar words come into my thoughts and heart: "A thing of beauty is a joy forever."

Thank you. Barb for sharing your wonderful creativity.
