Producing Calligraphy to follow a curved shape
can produce some attractive results.
Unfortunately drawing curved guidelines can be difficult, keeping the letter
angles consistently following the curves can be particularly challenging.
Faced with this problem I decided to write a
computer program to produce curved guidelines.
The result was a computer program I've called Calli-Graphic II.
At our September meeting Guild members were introduced to the concepts of writing on curved guidelines, or “Going round the bend” as the meeting was entitled”.
Starting with Arcs....

...we moved on to a simple wave form.
Members soon learned the art of rotating the paper and keeping their uprights
consistent with the curves of the guidelines.

From there they progressed to spirals, curlups and others.

For the benefit of those who were not at the meeting a number of the shapes are available for download (see below).
The upright guidelines are to ensure the upright
letter parts form a consistent angle with the longitudinal guidelines.
Keep rotating the page to give you a constant pen angle relative to the guidelines;
frequent paper rotation will be necessary.
Watch out that you do not smudge what you have just written; a particular problem
when writing on spirals or circles.
