Festive Ornaments and Cards

With the upcoming holiday season in mind Festive Ornaments and Cards were the topics for our October meeting.
A timely activity for those wishing to produce Calligraphic tree ornaments or cards for our annual card exchanges.

Mike supplied us with a number of festive shapes printed with the appropriate guidelines and Barb, demonstrating once again the depth of her inventiveness, developed a number of cards using these shapes.

Here are some examples of the work produced during the evening.

Pop-Up Card

The guidelines below can be used to produce the inside of a pop-up card.

You can download this image in pdf format here

Using a light box or similar, place the guidelines under you finished-work sheet and write your message following the curves. The guidelines are for the Foundational hand with a pen nib width of .07” or 1.8 mm, this is equivalent to an Itoya Doubleheader thin-end marker.Use a photocopier to enlarge or reduce for other sized nibs.

The design is based on using letter size (8.5” x 11”) or A4 card. The thicker line is the baseline, with one descender below. When you have completed the writing, draw round the outlines, both inside and out, using a soft pencil and then cut out the shape. It should be one continuous loop with a hole on the middle. Carefully erase the pencil marks. Carefully fold along the three dotted lines so that the tops of the trees meet and the section between the ‘trunks’ forms a ‘V’ shape.

Take another piece of card for the outer cover and fold in half, the fold must be parallel to the short side. Write your messages on the outer cover card.

Glue the base of the trees to the outer cover and glue the tips of the trees together, set aside to let glue dry.
