Susan Hufton,
Sterling Publishers Co., Inc. New York 1995 ISBN #0-8069-3986-9
Completely illustrated with creative projects, this book by Susan Hufton, is a valuable addition to any calligrapher's library. There is a complete guide to materials and writing instruments complete with photos of pens, paper, stick ink and gouache.
Hufton begins with Romans, carefully analyzing their structure, proportions
and variations. Next is Foundational, Italic, Uncial, and drawing Versals. She
delves into layout and design with numerous tips on how to make your work look
great. She examines weight, spacing and book margins.
The best part of the book is the projects which are photographed from start to finish and are all accompanied by detailed descriptions. A wine label, poster, greeting card, invitation, dinner menu, and calendar are amongst the inspiring projects she creates. A lovely manuscript book using gouache on printmaking paper is created through color pictures. Instructions on making and completing the binding are included.
The most unusual project is a colourful English village map complete with village
street plan and interesting anecdotes about the residents lettered in the margins.
Last but not least, are templates for cards, a box of recipe cards, envelope
and a greeting card, and a manuscript cover pattern.
This book appeals to all levels of calligraphers in that it inspires beginners to get started, intermediates to do more difficult projects and even advanced calligraphers can benefit from the project ideas. If you are looking for inspiration, try reading this step by step book and start lettering!
