At or April meeting we were treated to and introduction to the Uncial hand by the Guild Founder and first President, Barb Southerland.
With the thoroughness and enthusiasm that mars all Barbs presentations she launched her self into the unenviable task of taking us through the whole hand in about an hour and a half.
The Uncial hand consists only of Majuscules and was developed around the Second century AD. It lent itself to being used on parchment and vellum that were smoother than papyrus. It was used extensively from the 4th to 8 the centuries in both Sacred and Secular texts. A defining feature of the hand is the chunky serifs, demonstrated so ably in Barbs exemplar.
There are many references in textbooks to the Uncial hand, and many different styles are demonstrated. The version demonstrated by Barb is based on and 'X-height' of four nib widths and a pen angle of 20 degrees.
Many thanks Barb for an interesting evening, being both an introduction to many and a refresher for others.
