Did you know that Z was originally the sixth letter of the
alphabet? It was dropped by the Romans who thought they did
not need it and readopted it later but it lost its place in
line so it was moved to the end of the line.


 

Did you know that for a period of time the Greeks and Romans
wrote in alternating directions? This was called
"boustropedron" from the Greek meaning "ox-turning" e.g. in
the same pattern as an ox plowed the field.


 

Did you know that if you are right handed you are called
dextral and if you hare left handed you are sinistral?


Why is a special day called a red letter day? The mediaeval
monks and scribes used to rubricate (execute in red) the
days of the saints on their calendars so they would stand
out as a special time.


What letters occur most frequently in our writing?

Most of all "E", then in order of frequency A O I D H N R S
T U Y C F G L M W B K P Q X and Z.


What is the most frequent letter to start a word?
S followed by C and P in about 10% of words.


What do all these letters have in common: A H I M O T U V W X Y?
They are all mirror image letters, appearing the same in
reverse as when written in normal fashion.
