Pop-up Letters

Inspired by the work of Masahiro Chatani in his book "Pop-up Greeting Cards"

Being fascinated by the numerous examples of pop-up cards in Mashhiro's various books I decided to develop my own set of pop-up letters. An exemplar is shown below.

Pop-up Letter exemplar

To use, copy or trace the letters to a sheet of paper or thin card. Using a sharp hobby knife cut round the solid lines.

Using a blunt needle score the dotted and dashed lines. The dotted lines are mountain folds and should be scored on the reverse. The dashed lines are valley folds and should be scored from the face. Also score the card between the letters as a valley fold.

Then, very carefully start to crease the card along the folds. See example below.

I've also turned this exemplar into a True Type Font that can be used on you home computer.

This saves time in drawing out the letters individually

You can get the Pop-up font from HERE. NOTE to download RIGHT CLICK (in IE 5) and select "Save Target As", save the font to a directory then instal. See installation notes.

At the Guild's website is another pop-up font based on Neuland. (Get it HERE). You will readily appreciate from the Neuland Pop-up how it would be relatively straightforward to produce pop-up from original calligraphy. Because of its bold style Neuland is ideal for this. A bold Gothic would also work. Just make sure all the lower case letters sit on the same line. All the upper case letters must also sit on the same line, but not necessarily the same one as the lowercase. Sorry no descenders

Installing fonts

Windows '95/98

START> SETTINGS>CONTROL PANEL>FONTS>FILE>INSTALL NEW FONTS. Then, in the 'Folders' window select the folder where you saved the font(s) and the names of the fonts should appear in the 'List of fonts' window. Select the one you want.

Macintosh

I believe True Type Fonts are usable on both Windows and Mac platforms, if someone wants to send me the instructions for installing on a Mac I'll post it here.
